when i think of october, all my senses come alive. the scrunch of falling leaves beneath my feet makes me realize that the trees are getting ready for their long winter sleep...right now, they are dressed in red and gold, touched by the first frost. purple chirp out mums brighten yards and fields with color. october is the smell of cider and doughnuts. october is the sight of the harvest moon leaving the world to red and gold as it glides above the horizon....

F.R.I.D.A.Y.S.

Kim lay awake on her bed as she stared at the ceiling. It had been a long day and she was trying hard to sleep but just couldn’t. She looked at her Ate Tata who was sound asleep beside her. It was their last night in Bora and they were done taping the first scenes of their new show. She sighed as she thought of the date. The fifth of September. Time had flown by real fast.

Her phone rang and she wondered who it was.

“Gerald?” She smiled when she heard the voice on the other end of the line.

“Hi Kim! Did I wake you up?” He asked.

“Hindi nga ako makatulog eh.” She answered smiling. “Bakit ikaw? Hindi ka rin makatulog?”

“Hindi pa pwede eh.”

“Bakit hindi pa pwede?” Kim thought what could Gerald be thinking of.

“Would you like to take a walk?” Gerald asked.

Kim glanced at the clock on the bedside table and realized that it was half past one in the morning.

“Ha? Ngayon na?” She wanted to say yes but was hesitant. “Baka kasi magising si Ate Tata at hanapin ako.”

“Hindi naman tayo magtatagal eh.”

“Okay sige, pero magbibihis lang ako sandali.”

“Hindi na kailangan. Whatever it is that you are wearing now, maganda ka pa rin.” Gerald smiled as he pictured Kim in her favorite pink pajamas. She had always looked beautiful in any outfit.

“Ano ka! Naka pajama na kaya ako.” Kim laughed as she combed her hair. “Asan ka ba?”

“I’m right outside the cottage. Kahit naka pajama ka pa, ikaw pa rin ang pinaka maganda para sa akin kaya halika na.”

“Sira ka talaga..Nakakahiya kaya…” She paused. “O sige na nga, lalabas na ako.”

Kim felt her heart skipped a beat the moment she saw Gerald. Even if they were both exhausted from an all day taping, Gerald still managed to look fresh and handsome in his cargo shorts and plain white shirt.

“Hi!” She smiled as Gerald took her by the hand. “San ba tayo pupunta. We have an early flight tomorrow, I mean mamaya, remember?”

“Exactly. That’s why I want to make the most of whatever little time left that we have in this beautiful place.” He gave her hand a gentle squeeze.

“Naku, ano na naman yang naiisip mo, ha? Ikaw talaga!”

“Bakit Kim, ano bang naiisip mo? Just let me know, I’m all ears.” He grinned. “Gusto mo ba, itanan na kita?” He was joking.

“Tanan ka dyan. Mamaya nyan, may makarinig pa sa’yo. Ma headline pa tayo.”

“Eh ikaw, ano bang naiisip mo?”

“Wala!” Kim shrugged. “Halika na nga. Dun tayo sa tabing dagat.” She went ahead but Gerald pulled her close to him.

“Sandali lang.”

“O bakit?”

“Wala ba akong kiss dyan?” Here goes Don Romantiko’s “The Moves 101”.

“Ano ka? Kiss kissin mo yang mukha mo, unggoy!” She laughed. “Halika na nga.”

Gerald showed no signs of moving.

“Hindi ako aalis dito kung walang kiss.” He spoke louder than usual.

Kim placed a hand on his mouth, afraid that somebody would hear them. “Sshhhh! Wag kang maingay. Baka magising si Ate Tata, sige ka.”

“Okay lang sa’kin.”

“Gerald naman eh!”

“Gerald naman eh!” He couldn’t help but smile as he repeated her words. He always found it sweet for Kim to act that way. Every time Kim is in this kind of mood, Ge knows the perfect way to bring things to next level. The “kiliti sa kili-kili ni Kim move” has never failed him.

“Ge ano ba! Tama na…nakikiliti nga ako eh!” Kim laughed as he started to tickle her armpits.

“Hindi kita titigilan..” He held her close to him.

“Ano ba..tama na.” Kim tried so hard not to scream. “Ge please!”

Kim tried to jerk away from Gerald and accidentally hit him with her elbows, on the corner of his mouth.

“Ouch! Aray ko naman Kim. Ang sakit!” Gerald faked a pain. Hindi naman talaga masakit. It was more of a soft thud but he wanted to play pretend. “Ang tulis kaya ng siko mo.”

“Ooops…Sorry…Hindi ko naman sinasadya. Ikaw kasi eh!” Kim was naturally worried. She had always been so sweet and sincere. She tried to inspect if there was a wound. “Dumugo ba?”

“Ang sakit talaga..Kawawa naman ako o…” Gerald tried hard not to laugh when he heard Kim’s worried remark.

“Tingnan ko nga…”

Kim pouted when she found out that there was no trace of blood and Ge was just faking it.

“Niloloko mo naman ako eh! Diyan ka na nga!” She turned and walked briskly away from Gerald.

“Kimmy, joke lang! Wag ka nang magalit, please? Hindi na mauulit.” Trying hard to catch up with Kim’s sudden “walk out drama”.

“Ewan ko sa’yo!”

“Naglalambing lang naman ang tao eh!”

She stopped walking and faced him. “Naglalambing ka dyan. Alam mo bang nagtatampo ako sa’yo?”

“Ha? Bakit naman?” He pretended not having a clue but Gerald knew exactly where it was leading. “Anong ginawa ko?”

“Yun na nga eh, wala kang ginawa!”

“Ano nga?”

“Gerald, wala ka ba talagang maalala?” Kim placed her hands on her hips for emphasis.

He shook his head.

“Then I better go back to my room and sleep.”

“No. You’re not going anywhere.” He held her hands in his and smiled. “I’m sorry it’s two days late but… happy monthsary!”

Kim remained still and didn’t say a word.

“Hindi ko naman nakalimutan eh, kaya lang. we were busy taping on the third, tapos kahapon din.” Gerald tried his best to explain. Of course, he didn’t forget. He never will. The third day of each month had been significant to him since he got together with Kim.

“Lagi ka na lang late. Pasalamat ka mahal kita.” Kim’s voice was barely audible.

“Oy hindi ah. Ngayon lang, kasi nga super busy tayo. Teka, may sinabi ka, ano yun?” He probed.

“Sabi ko, lagi ka na lang late.”

“Hindi lang yan ang sinabi mo.” Gerald was smiling like crazy. He heard what Kim said but wanted to hear it again. It was music to his ears. “Kim, I want to hear that again.” His voice was soft as he looked at her in the eye.

Kim smiled. She knows that she was blushing.

“Sabi ko.” She paused.

Gerald waited anxiously as if his life relied only in those words.

“Sabi ko, kurimaw ka!” Kim said in between giggles. She tiptoed and surprised Gerald with a soft and gentle kiss on the lips. It was delicate and it left Gerald in awe. “Does that answer your question, Mr. Anderson?”

Gerald was still speechless as he pulled Kim into a hug and showered little kisses to her left temple, forehead and her hair. He gave himself a couple of seconds to inhale her sweetness as he thought to himself what good thing he’d done for God to give him such a precious gift…

“I have a surprise for you.” Gerald said as soon as they let go of the hug.

Kim’s eyes twinkled like stars in the night. “You do?”

“Yes.” He placed an arm around Kim and made her face the beachfront. “Close your eyes and then let’s take ten steps forward.”

Kim obliged. Her heart was filled with excitement.

“Now, three steps to the right. There. Now, turn around.”

Kim held her breath and when Gerald finally allowed her to open her eyes, she saw a stone right in front of her.

“Bato?” She asked in wonder. ”Para saan ‘to?”

Gerald smiled. “That’s for me to know and for you to find out.”

With that, Kim lifted the stone and there lay a small white envelope. She tore it open and wondered even more.

“A hundred pesos? Gerald ano ‘to?” He had always been full of surprises but this time, Kim couldn’t put a finger on what he was up to.

“One hundred pesos. Yan lang ang budget natin sa date natin ngayon.”

“Ha? Ang kuripot mo naman. Ano naman ang mabibili natin sa one hundred?”

“Like I’ve said Kim, that’s for me to know and for you to find out.” Gerald gently stroked her face. “Besides, the best things in life are free.” He winked at her.

Kim smiled. Of course, it never mattered to her. It’s always been the thought that counts.

Not long after, they were walking hand in hand, eating pork barbecue.

“Paano yan? Sixty pesos na lang ang pera natin? Nauuhaw pa naman ako. Kung mabilaukan ako dito, kasalanan mo.” She joked.

“Ayun o, may mineral water!” Gerald pointed to a small bottle of mineral water that was lying on the sand.

“Ayoko nga. Mamaya nyan magkasakit pa ako. Hindi natin alam kung kanino yan eh.”

Gerald picked the bottle up and handed it to her. “Naka seal pa naman eh. Safe pa na inumin yan.”

“Kahit na ba, baka sa mga nag-ha-honeymoon yan eh” She read a note that says, “FOR MY WIFE”. Ibalik mo nga yan dyan.”

“Tingnan mo nga, hindi mo naman tinatapos eh.”

Kim read the note once again and a smile formed on her lips as soon as she realized that it was Gerald who wrote the note.

FOR MY WIFE.
Love, Gerald

“Ang corny mo talaga…” Kim said smiling. “Anong wife ang sinasabi mo dito?”

“Ikaw nga yan. Kinasal na tayo di’ba?” Gerald looked at her in the eye.

“Kasal ka dyan. You wish! Sa palabas lang kaya yun..” Once again, her blood went up to her face.

“Uy, nag-blush… if I know wish mo rin yun.I’m sure di ka nakatulog the night before the taping of our wedding scene.” Gerald teased Kim.

“Alam mo ang feeling mo talaga Mr. Anderson. Umalis ka nga sa harapan ko!” Kim, sensing that she’s being pushed to the corner, snapped at Gerald.

“Opps! Bawal ang pikon. Sige ka, di mo makikita ang second surprise ko.” Gerald, trying to redeem himself, said.

Kim shot him a puzzled look.

“My second surprise is called…” Gerald led her to a mat that was laid on the sand. “When love begins.”

“Ano? When love begins? Ano yun, pelikula?”

“Exactly. Parang reenactment nung movie nina Anne at Aga. Di’ba? Parang ganito din, magkayap lang sila na natulog right on this spot sa Bora.”

“Ayoko nga! Mamaya nyan may makakita pa sa tin dito. Malay mo, may mga Kimerald na nagsa-spy sa paligid.”

“Okay lang. Ayaw mo ba nun, makakapagsaya ka ng libo-libong tao?” Gerald held her close to him.

“Nakakainis ka talaga.” She laughed and then there was silence. They lay beside each other, holding hands, both of their dreamy gazes immediately focused on the star-studded sky. It was a wonderful night. The sea breeze was a little bit cold but Gerald made sure that Kim was warm and comfortable as they snuggled and shared a single blanket.

“Ang ganda ano?” Kim said with a sigh referring to a shooting star.

Gerald didn’t say a word and she thought he had slept on her.

“Ge? Tinutulugan mo naman ako eh.”

“Hindi ako natutulog. I was just wishing on a star.” He finally said.

“Talaga? Anong wish mo?”

“Secret!”

“Secret ka dyan.” Kim smiled. She always find herself smiling whenever she’s with Ge. “Sige nga, I dare you, kaya mo bang bilangin ang mga bituin sa langit?”

“Ano yun? Hindi mo sinasabi sa kin na may pagka makata ka pala.”

“I’m serious Ge.” Kim said in a serious tone.

Gerald turned his eyes at her. “Sige. I don’t think I can but you know what?”

Kim then turned to look at him. They were holding their gazes. “Ano?”

“I can’t count all the stars in the sky but even if it takes forever, I’ll try counting them with you.”

Kim closed her eyes and felt the words that Gerald said to her. It touched her heart to know that he would be willing to do such a thing. Needless to say, she would gladly count the stars with him too.

“Ang baduy!” She kidded.

“Baduy, akala ko ba, seryosong usapan to?”

“Ge, I was just kidding. Hindi siya baduy at kahit na baduy pa yan, I don’t care. I’m up to it.” She smiled and squeezed his hand reassuringly.

“Sinabi mo yan ha.”

She nodded.

“Naku, anong oras na, baka kailangan na talaga nating matulog.” She panicked when she remembered that it was late.

She got up and Gerald did too.

“Dun muna tayo..” He said pointing at an acoustic band that was playing at a nearby bar. “Sandali na lang.”

Kim couldn’t resist.

There were only five people in the area when they arrived. The music changed the moment they got in.

“Can I have this dance with you?” Gerald asked.

“What? No, ayoko. Nakakahiya. Ang daming tao. Tsaka wala naman ibang sumasayaw e.”

“Okay lang yan…Sige na please?”

She gave in.

Gerald pulled her close as they swayed to the music. It was so close that they were only a breath away from each other. Gerald kissed her forehead.

“Ge, huwag dito. May mga tao.”

Gerald playfully looked at her. “Bakit, gusto mo ba yung tayo lang?”

She didn’t say a word but she shot him a warning look.

“Hindi, loko lang. Joke lang yun.” Kim was surprised as Gerald lifted her from the ground, and placed both of her feet right above his.

“Gerald, what are you doing? Ang hirap sumayaw pag ganyan. Mabigat ako.”

“Sinong may sabi? Hindi ka mabigat okay and I want it this way…I want you close to me.”

Suddenly, they drifted into a world of their own as they continued to sway to the music that only their hearts could hear. When the song was about to end, Gerald smiled and sang along…

“Loving you, oh oh….
Such an easy thing to do…
No you’ll never know, it’s driving me crazy
Cause it flows and grows…
No, I won’t let it stop, No I’m not giving up.
Loving you, just a bit too much…”

Kim felt a tear fell from her eyes. It had always felt this good with Gerald around. Sometimes, it drives her crazy but she liked it that way. Their love had grown stronger and deeper in time. Gerald had been her best friend and confidante for two and a half years now. Since they went out of Big Brother house her life had been one hell of a roller coaster ride. And she was happy that she had him with her to enjoy the ride.

She thought that the surprises were over but Gerald was not done just yet.

“Are you hungry?” She asked when Gerald led her in front of T.G.I.Fridays. “Ang mahal kaya dito. Sixty pesos na lang ang pera natin, remember?”

“I’m not hungry but I do have another surprise.” Gerald announced.

“Bakit dito?”

“Kasi, Friday ngayon di’ba?”

“Eh bakit nga?”

“Sabi nga ni Alex, ‘hindi ba pwedeng wala lang?’” Gerald mimicked the character he played for in their launching movie.

Kim looked at the signage of the restaurant. Kim found it unique given that it was made of pieces of wood contorted to form each letter of the restaurant’s name.

”So ano to? Gusto mo ipa-spell sa akin ang Friday?” She asked in wonder.

“Ang masasabi ko lang, don’t take things at face value.” Gerald quipped while giving Kim a challenging look.

With that, Kim started inspecting the first letter of the signage and found a piece of paper taped at the back of the wood. She shot Gerald a questioning look.

“Go ahead. Basahin mo.”

She took a deep breath as she unfolded the note.

F - FOREVER FRIENDS. You were my friend from the very start and I promise that I’ll be yours forever.

Kim looked at Gerald. She smiled. They’ve always been the best of friends.

She took the second paper attached to letter R and read the contents.

R - Romantic Strolls. This is just the first of this kind of adventure and I guarantee that we’ll have many more in the future.

True enough, Gerald had always managed to surprise her with so many things before, really unforgettable ones but tonight was extra special.

The next one really touched her heart that she started to cry.

I – I DO. I look forward to that day when I would finally hear these words from you.

She looked at Gerald, there standing in front of her, his eyes were a bit misty as he looked at her tenderly. She knows he is happy.

D – Dream Girl. I only have two simple dreams. First is for my parents to be proud of me and the second is to find the perfect girl for me. Thank you for making one of my dreams come true.

At this point, Kim was having a hard time containing her emotions. Once she started crying, she can’t seem to stop. She had thought that Gerald had forgotten abut their special day and now, she couldn’t even believe everything that was happening. It was simply overwhelming.

She continued reading. The moment she unfolded the next paper, Gerald said while grinning at her sheepishly, “You will like that one for sure…”

She almost burst into laughter when she found out what Gerald meant.

A – Anderson. When the right time comes, there’d be many little Andersons running and playing around us. : )

Y – You. You make me want to be the best me.

S – Serendipity. I feel like the whole universe conspired just so our paths would cross. I’m glad you came this early in my life.

Kim couldn’t contain her feelings any longer. She gathered all her strength, well whatever was left after reading all those messages, and hugged Gerald as tight as she could. Gerald hugged her back as she sobbed in his chest. She had never felt so safe and loved while wrapped in another person’s arms.

“Thank you…” It was all that she could say. There were so many things that she wanted to tell him but those two words were the most significant at that very moment.

Gerald wished that moment would never end. He could have stayed that way and be lost in the moment forever. Kim was with him, he loved her and that was all that mattered.

But then, they knew they had to go back to the cottage, there were only a few hours left before their flight.

“Thank you very much for the wonderful time, Ge. I don’t know what else to say.” They were back on front of Kim’s cottage and Gerald brought her to the door.

“Are you happy?” He asked.

“More than words can say.” She said with a smile.

Gerald took both her hands, turned them upside and planted a kiss in each palm. “Fridays Kim.” He sweetly said.

“Fridays too, Gerald.” She said as she tiptoed and gave him a peck on his nose.

Kim opened the door as gently as she could, afraid that Ate Tata would wake up and find out that she had been out for almost two hours.

Instead, she was surprised to see the room full of balloons, pink balloons floating in the air. There must be a hundred of it in their room. She could not see anything except for those balloons and what looked like pieces of papers attached to each balloon string. It took her some time to realize that those papers were actually wallet sized pictures of her and Gerald.

She can’t help but laugh when she looked at one of them and saw herself and Gerald clad in the “cow” costume that Kuya asked them to wear during one of the tasks inside the PBB house. Both of them were in the sink, washing the dishes. Their laughter was perfectly captured by the photo. Kim smiled to herself and thought, “This is where it all started, thank you Big Brother”.

The next picture she was able to get her hand on was a stolen shot while they were shooting the Nescafe commercial. It was a picture of Gerald carrying her through the rain. She could still remember the “kilig” that she felt while shooting the said commercial. She believed that her affinity to the rain started from there.

The third is a still shot of their longest ever kissing scene in My Girl. Just looking at the picture made Kim blush, she really felt uneasy while taping that scene. And as if Gerald connived with the directors, it took them four takes to complete the scene!

In the sea of balloons and pictures, Kim knows that it would probably take her forever just to finish looking at them. Suddenly, a realization dawned on her that in as much as these pictures captured their moments together, there are still hundreds, maybe thousands more of memories that only their hearts were able to capture…

“Kim…” Ate Tata called her.

Startled and as if coming out of a trance, Kim suddenly asked “Ate Tata? Ano po to?”

Ate Tata did not answer but simply handed her a small needle. “Sabi ni Gerald, paputukin mo muna ang mga balloons para malaman mo ang isa pa niyang gift para sa’yo.”

Kim couldn’t believe what she just heard. It had turned out to be a day of surprises, of wonderful surprises and just when she thought it was over….there came another one.

She started popping the balloons with the needle until she came across a white balloon situated far inside the room and surrounded by pink ones. Kim can hear her heart beating double time because she was quite sure that whatever gift Gerald has in store for her, it is definitely inside that balloon. With that thought, Kim popped the white balloon.

A ring fell from the inside and rolled on the floor and just as she was about to pick it up, somebody else did…

“Ge?” Kim said, her voice breaking because of her overwhelming emotions.

“Don’t cry baby…” He told her as he started wiping her tears with his own hand.

But it only made Kim cry even more.
“Kim?” Ge asked Kim, obviously worried.

“Ano ka ba, tears of joy nga to eh. Ikaw kasi, ang hilig mo akong paiyakin.” She said in between sobs.

Gerald smiled at what Kim said.

She was right.

There was a time when Kim asked her if he would promise not to make her cry. His answer was no, but then he added, “You will only cry happy tears.”

At that moment, Gerald took her hand and placed the white gold ring on her finger.

“This is a promise ring. Promise me that you are not going to take this off no matter what happens. I know that we should take this slow and we still have a lot of things to go through, and I can’t guarantee that we won’t fight in the long run, but I want you to know that I’ll always be here for you.” He paused as he realized that his eyes were also getting misty. “I love you, Kimberly Sue Yap Chiu.”

“Ge, you never fail to surprise me and make me happy. Everyday I thank God that He sent you my way to teach me to make the most out of life. I love you too, Gerald Randolph Opsima Anderson.” Kim said while gazing up at him lovingly.

With that, Gerald gently lowered his head and kissed her lips. It was probably the sweetest kiss they have ever shared. It was a kiss filled with renewed promises.

“Thank you for giving me the best monthsary ever.” Kim said when they pulled apart.

“You are most welcome and thank you for coming into my life.”

Once more, they shared a kiss that they will remember forever…

In the wee hours before dawn, Kim tossed and turned on her bed, she still could not believe the things that have happened. She didn’t care much about sleeping. She’d rather go through all the events of their unforgettable “adventure” and try her best to lock each sweet moment to her “Kimerald” memory vault.

She was toying with the ring on her finger that Gerald gave her earlier when her phone signaled a message. It was from Gerald.

“Kim, you are my poem personified and my prayer answered…”

Kim smiled to herself thinking that she was not, after all, the only one being cheated of a restful sleep.

DISCLAIMER :
Nothing in this blog, in any way, shape or form, truly represents Kim Chui and Gerald Anderson. It's fiction. Completely made up stories that don't have a grain of truth in them. You may find a date that coincides with a real happening in their lives, but other than that...it's all fiction. Please keep that in mind when you read it. I have never met them, nor any of their friends and family and I do NOT profess in any way to know the real them. I just like to write fiction and my imagination seemed at ease with them as characters to my make believe world. Also, the song used in this story is promptly credited to either the songwriter or the singer at the end of the story where that particular lyrics were used. Again, everything is make believe ... everything is pure fiction. It's a product of our mushy, cheesy and caffeinated imagination. It's a fairy tale. Katuwaan lang... kathang-isip lamang.
